Another must-read Ric Flair story is from his adopted hometown
newspaper, THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, which you can read at this
link: http://www.charlotte.com/sports_breaking/story/560047.html.
Tom Sorenson reported Fans outside the Florida Citrus Bowl Sunday
chanted "Woooo!" long before Ric Flair's final match began.
Flair walked to the ring at Wrestlemania 24 in a
trademark sparkling blue robe. His opponent was Shawn Michaels, a cool guy and
exceptional wrestler who had grown up idolizing
Flair. Flair, finally at the end of his legendary
35-year career, reached all the way back to put on one last show. He used his
signature Figure Four Leglock, and even inadvertently nailed Michaels with a
move that more or less violated the rules of civility and the WWE.
But youth ultimately prevailed. Finally, Flair was
pinned. Flair was told last year that he would have to
retire after his next loss, and this was it. He stayed on the canvas after the
pin, wanting, it seemed, to take in all those cheers.
As he walked away, and as the noise and the whoooos
grew in passion and size, Flair turned. With tears in his eyes he blew kisses to
the fans. The best there ever was finished. And
because he is, wrestling will never be the same.
