The Ring of Honor promotion has made a move that is potentially even bigger than their decision to run pay per view. The promotion will upgrade from the Manhattan Center Ballroom on 34th Street in New York City to the larger room inside the same facility, The Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday, May 10th. ROH owner Cary Silken and booker Gabe Sapolsky broke the news over the weekend during ROH's 6th Anniversary weekend, which was highlighted by a well received show at the Manhattan Center.
The Hammerstein Ballroom was the site for 2 amazing back-to-back ECW television tapings in August, 2000, and also for the final 2 pay per views of the original company's existence, "Massacre on 34th Street" (December, 2000) and "Guilty As Charged" (January, 2001). Sapolsky, who published the programs for the original ECW under Paul Heyman, must see this as the biggest move ROH can make at the moment.
The Hammerstein was also the setting for ECW One Night Stand on June 12, 2005, and also the 2nd One Night Stand on June 11, 2006, when Rob Van Dam defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship.
WWE ran the Hammerstein one more time, in August, as a television taping for the new ECW, which was not well received. By then, Vince McMahon's new vision for the group had come into play, and the ECW fans were not receptive to McMahon's vision.
ROH has not announced any matches for the Hammerstein show as of this posting.
