Wrestling News Desk has confirmed with both a source within TNA
Wrestling and a source close to Atlas Security owner Ronnie Lang that
TNA has come to some sort of an arrangement with Atlas Security, the
famed (some would infer "infamous") security squad that kept hundreds
of riots from breaking out during the heyday of Paul Heyman's original
Extreme Championship Wrestling.
Like so many of the people who worked for ECW, Lang tried his hand at recapturing the magic last year when he ran a show called PWX at the ECW Arena. On September 13, 3006, Lang's organization ran the former ECW Arena (who hasn't?), presenting a show called Lighting The Fuse. Lack of ticket sales with somewhere between 200 and 350 fans, a disappointing show despite some decent matches, bad booking, ring ropes that collapsed, and an incident involving an inebriated New Jack and 25 to 30 police officers all convinced Lang that whatever Heyman did that so many others (Tod Gordon, Rob Black, Shane Douglas, Court Bauer, even Vince McMahon who brought the brand back) have tried to recapture, the "magic formula" still resides with the Mad Scientist.
Here's what Dave Meltzer reported on the New Jack incident and the show:
In the always fun with New Jack department, he was booked last night on the Pro Wrestling Xplosion debut show in Philadelphia at the Alhambra (old ECW Arena) and ended up being taken out by 25-30 police officers. According to a source within the promotion, he had been drinking. He ordered a sprite at the concession stand and was given a 7 Up, and started cutting a promo on the woman who worked there. A guy who worked on the ring crew and knew the girl, stood up to him, and got punched. This brought out Ronnie Lang, the head of Atlas Security, and promoter of the show. He and New Jack started arguing, and got in each other's face and one report said there was shoving back-and-forth with neither backing down and them being separated. Someone called the police. At one point New Jack locked himself in a room, but he eventually he was taken away. He was not arrested, as the ring crew guy decided against pressing charges. It's highly unlikely he'll be used by the promotion again. It wasn't an angle and took away from the show when all of a sudden all these police officers showed up. Plus, the ring ropes were loose from a problem with the ring they got from CZW and with the ring crew guy hurt, they had to take a 30 minute intermission at one point to fix it.
The show itself drew 350 fans: Christopher Daniels b Jay Lethal, SATs & Altar Boy Luke b Sonjay Dutt & Ruckus & ?, Claudio Castagnoli b Delirious, Mike Quackenbush & Equinox & Shane Storm b Hydra & Ice Cream Man & ?, Team 3-D b Rhino & Abyss when Rhino gored Abyss through a table and Rhino got the 3-D, Chris Hero b Arik Cannon (replacing Davey Richards), Ian Rotten & Amy Lee b Mana & Mickie Knuckles (both the men and women juiced and Ian and Knuckles beat the holy hell out of each other which got over but also had people shaking their heads), A.J. Styles b Homicide (match of the night), Steve Corino b Teddy Hart when they did the Montreal Survivor Series finish on Hart. Hart bled from the mouth, and even through the post-match Bret Hart fit. Said to be a good show but too long. No return date was announced. (thanks to Frank Douglas)
Pro Wrestling Epicenter covered the event with this report:
The Pro Wrestling Xplosion debut promoted by Atlas Security's Ronnie Lang last night at the New Alhambra in Philadelphia, PA drew in the area of 200-300 fans, which had to be a major disappointment given the level of talent booked. Among fans who attended the show, the actual in-ring product was given high marks. The entire show was said to have been really strong, especially Chris Hero vs. Arik Cannon and AJ Styles vs. Homicide.
There were complaints about delays during the show, including a 30 minute intermission, because of cables underneath the ring that was used (Combat Zone Wrestling's) being screwed up, which led to the ring breaking at least twice and the ring ropes sagging all night. Obviously, that was beyond the control of the company and not something they wanted, so they did their best to deal with the issues.
We have results up on the main page of the site, and if you attended the show, please feel free to submit a live report by clicking on my name above.
Obviously the story that is getting the focus coming out of the show is that former ECW star New Jack was involved in a situation with the Philadelphia police following a physical incident with a staffer of the New Alhambra. According to a few reports we received, Jack was involved in a loud situation at the concession stand yelling at an employee, which led to either a woman or a security guard (not associated with Atlas Security) being physically assaulted. One story making the rounds, if you can believe this one (and given this business, I can), is that Jack was upset over being given 7-Up instead of Sprite. The venue then called the police, with 20 cops arriving in multiple police cars. Jack was then removed from the venue. The incident killed any fan interest in the Delirious vs. Claudio Castagnoli match that was ongoing at the same time as the majority of the fan attention went to the police arriving.
RF Video's Rob Feinstein and Doug Gentry were backstage at the event, with Gentry running the locker room and giving out finishes. They also brought in additional talent to the show, according to one source. The financial backing for PWX is an investor out of New York City with connections to the boxing industry who promoter Ronnie Lang has had business dealings with in the past. Lang, wanting to insure that the debut was big out of the gate, made the call to personally bring in Team 3D to add to the luster of the debut event.
Former ECW producer Charlie Bruzzese filmed last night's show for future DVD release. The old school ECW vibe continued with former ECW ring announcer Stephen DeAngelis handling ring introductions and John Finnegan and Mike Kehner both refereeing. Bryce Rensburg, Matt Bennett, and Dee Edwards were also used as officials.
Jack Victory was booked at the last minute as a surprise to appear in Steve Corino's corner vs. Teddy Hart as well. CZW star Ruckus appeared as a second in Hart's corner.
PWG and ROH regular Davey Richards was advertised for the PWX event, but did not appear. No idea what the issue was.
There was no word about a return date mentioned backstage or publicly to the fans.

I remember listening to Heyman on the radio when WWE was publicizing the first ECW One Night Stand, and he was talking about Atlas Security and said Ronnie Lang's group was the best security he had ever seen in his life because they had the ability to become part of the show but never lost the audience's understanding that "Atlas" was there to ensure that rowdiness never spilled over into physical altercations. I also heard others talk about how "Atlas" would spot trouble before it happened, especially during the Shane Douglas and Dudley pushes when Heyman allowed these performers to take the audience to the brink.
Since the folding of the original ECW promotion, Atlas has worked for every wrestling organization imaginable, including coming back with ECW One Night Stand, and hired by WWE for the resurrection of the brand, only to be released by WWE's Richard Herring (who is in charge of complying with state regulations and licensing matters) after several complaints from WWE Executive Producer Kevin Dunn, claiming his production staff was having a hard time working with Atlas.
A former writer for "Smackdown" who was at the first ECW on Sci Fi taping in Trenton, New Jersey said "it was obvious to anyone listening on headsets that KD (Kevin Dunn's name to insiders) wanted them gone."
No details were available as of this posting as to when Atlas will start, or how many of the guards will be used on TNA Wrestling's upcoming television or house shows.
