EXCLUSIVELY confirm this evening that ECW lead writer
David Lagana has been released by World Wrestling Entertainment. Details are not
known as to what, if any specific reason was the cause for the dismissal, but
the terrible ratings for ECW cannot have helped his situation. Lagana assumed
the position as Lead Writer of the show after former ECW owner and legendary
creative force in professional wrestling Paul Heyman had a major falling out
with The McMahons after the December To Dismember pay per view in December,
2006. Lagana, ironically, was named Lead Writer of the Smackdown television show
in 2003 when then-lead writer Heyman and Vince McMahon had one of their many
fallings out.
Lagana, like most people within WWE, had both his friends and his enemies,
but he was always seen as a better assistant to someone like Heyman or Dusty
Rhodes, who for now will be the Lead Writer for ECW.
He was seen as more of an "Internet Expert" than a writer/producer of
wrestlers, although his advocates will point out he was one of the people
responsible for some of John Cena's early heel work against The Undertaker.
But the ECW brand has been a miserable failure without Heyman, and Lagana
inherited a brand that was clearly the bastard child of WWE. While Heyman was
combative and defensive about the brand's positioning, many feel that Lagana
simply tried to get by with the McMahons.
