Welcome to www.mmanewsdesk.com's Live Coverage of EliteXC at The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey as Mixed Martial Arts arrives on CBS Network Television in prime time.

Joe Sampieri defeated Mike Groves by TKO (Strikes) at 4:58 into Round 1.

Zach Makovsky defeated Andre Soares by Unanimous Decision.

James Jones defeated Calvin Kattar with the Rear Naked Choke at 4:49 into Round 1.

Wilson Reis defeated. Justin Robbins with the Rear Naked Choke at 4:06 into Round 1.

Matt Makowski defeated Nick Serra by TKO (Unable to Continue) at 3:57 into Round 2.

Chris Liguori defeated Jim Bova by TKO (Doctor's Stoppage) at 4:31 into Round 2.

Brett Rogers defeated Jon Murphy by KO at 1:01 into Round 1.

Joey Villasenor defeated Phil Baroni by TKO at 1:11 into Round 1. Villasenor came across like the real deal and Baroni came across like nothing but hype in this fight.

Gina Carano defeated  Kaitlin Young by TKO (Doctor Stoppage) as Carano didn't make weight, but she was a dynamo and worked over Young's eye to such a degree that the doctor determined Young could not continue. Carano was a huge star here.

Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith ruled a No Contest (Doctor Stoppage) at 3:26 into Round 3 after an accidental thumb in the eye by Lawler caused the doctor to examine Smith and rule he was unable to continue despite his panicked pleading with the referee not to allow the fight to be stopped. This was a simply amazing fight, and a real shame it had to end like this. In the 1st round,  Smith came at Lawler  and tried to bring the fight to the champ, but Lawler hammered Smith with a barrage of jabs and a couple of body kicks that seemed to hurt the challenger. There was no doubt the 5:00 time limit in round one saved Smith, as Lawler was about to finish him off. But round two saw Smith come at Lawler with punches, knees and inside the clinch with elbows. Lawler was forced to go defensive. We have a bloody fight on both sides right now. This was exciting, and everyone was smelling a knockout from someone. In Round 3, Lawler came at Smith with everything. The bloodied combatants were exchanging when Lawler put out his hand defensively and it was clearly an unintentional poke in the eye. The referee called for a period of up to 5 minutes for Smith to recover. The doctor stepped into the cage and because Smith said twice that he couldn't see, and even though he was begging and pleading for the fight to go on, the doctor decided the damage was done and the fight was stopped and ruled a no contest due to an accidental eye poke.  EliteXC President Gary Shaw announced during the post-fight interviews that he would pay both fighters their normal purse plus their contractual win bonuses for their respective performances on Saturday night. Both men showed great respect for the other and both were disappointed at the way the fight ended. Lawler retains the title. A rematch is going to happen.

Kimbo Slice defeated James "The Collosus" Thompson by TKO at 38 seconds into Round 3, but that's not the real story here. We have a lot to talk about tonight. Kimbo survived and was damn lucky to do so. However, while the story of the night is that Kimbo won even though he got his ass kicked, there's a lot more to say about this fight. Both men survived submission attempts. Both men had moments where it appeared it was going to be over in a second. Kimbo rocked Thompson with some punches that should have crushed The Collosus, but Thompson would be dominating moments later. Thompson had Slice almost choked out, and the fact the fight wasn't stopped in the 2nd round, when Thompson was reigning down on Slice with one armed hooked and Kimbo's head against the cage, is a matter of debate to come up. Thompson has this huge cauliflowered ear, and it should have been drained before the fight. Kimbo targeted it in the 3rd round, and when he nailed it, the ear exploded. Kimbo was moving in the knockout on a clearly dazed Thompson, who was still coming forward and absorbing the blows, when the referee stepped in. Thompson, rocked, didn't want the fight stopped, and at one point tried shoving the referee out of the way. That should be interesting to see what happens over the shove. Kimbo was very humble in his victory speech, saying he has a lot to learn, and could barely speak. He had to pick himself off the mat, where he collapsed after the fight, and Thompson actually looked like the last man standing.
