UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St Pierre will return to Montreal an even
bigger star this week after a truly brilliant performance against Jon Fitch in
the main event of UFC 87: Seek and Destroy. The amazing champion won a 5 round
unanimous decision victory over Fitch tonight at the Target Center in
Minneapolis, with scores 50-43, 50-44, 50-4.
St. Pierre opened up the right way, dominating the first round. He scored
two takedowns and two knockdowns and had Fitch in big trouble at the
end of the round. To Fitch's credit, he hung in there, much like Heath
Herring simply didn't go unconscious from Brock Lesnar's brutality in the
previous fight.
The second round was a lot closer, as Fitch started showing the skills
that made him such a noteworthy challenger to St Pierre, and actually drew
blood as St Pierre still won the round but Fitch made an impression.
In the third round, St Pierre poured it on, and tried to finish Fitch, but
simply couldn't put him away. That's not a knock on GSP, it's a real testament
to Fitch, who just kept surviving this onslaught. Fitch even came on strong in
the opening of the fourth round, busting open GSP's left eye. This of course
only matched Fitch's left eye, which was practically swollen shut.
The fifth round was like a martial arts movie. St Pierre was showing off
his skills, and Fitch was his tackling dummy. But don't read that as a knock of
Fitch. How he survived this fight is anyone's guess. He is one tough opponent,
and the punishment he took and kept fighting back against was nothing short of
awe-inspiring.
GSP takes the victory, keeps the title.
