If there's one thing that is apparent about Brock Lesnar, it's that the
monstrous 6'3'' 280 pound behemoth is almost unimpressed by the
attention his UFC 91 main event against Randy Couture has brought him. "I've had
the opportunity to wrestle in front of 72,000 people," Lesnar told The Dayton
(Ohio) Daily News, "That's entertainment, but you're still in front
of a large crowd."
In a statement that shocked a lot of people, Lesnar commented, "I've
headlined many pay-per-views. This will be just another one."
It's a smart approach for the man former ECW Owner Paul Heyman coined "The
Next Big Thing" in pro wrestling 6 years ago, as Lesnar approaches the fight for
the fight, not for the attraction. Brock Lesnar will step into the Octagon this
Saturday night against the best counter-strategy expert in Mixed Martial Arts
history, the legendary "Natural," Randy Couture. And while the odds have now
moved in favor of a Lesnar
victory, he refuses to consider Couture anything but serious
competition.
About the current UFC Heavyweight Champion, against whom Lesnar is
scheduled for a 5-Round Title Fight, the former NCAA Champion noted, "I wouldn't
even consider Randy an underdog. Randy ... is a world class athlete, regardless
of his age."
Can Lesnar be the first WWE Champion to successfully make the transition to
the real world of fights? Lesnar thinks so. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for me," he noted.
For Couture, a victory over Lesnar means he's one step closer to a fight
with Fedor Emelianenko. A loss would mean the Fedor fight will probably never
happen. If Lesnar wins, he faces the winner of the Noguiera vs Mir fight next
month (which will determine the Interm Champion, created in Couture's absence)
in a Title Unification Match sometime in 2009.
