The official ticket prices for the April 19th UFC 83 event at the Bell Centre in Montreal are $50, $100, $150, $225, $400 and $550. But if you want to go to the show, you're going to pay a lot more. We should emphasize that. A LOT MORE!
More than 13,000 tickets went in a pre-sale to the UFC's fan Fight Club and the rest went within minutes of the box office opening last Friday. According to The Canadian Press, that has created a sellers' market. On Stubhub.com, there were more than 200 ticket listings Tuesday ranging from $433 for a seat in a corner nosebleed section to $12,000 for a private box that seats 10.
"This is absolute madness," wrote one frustrated fan on an MMA message board, "At this rate, they should just move the whole event to the Olympic Stadium, it holds 56,040 and the UFC could rake in even more $$$."
On EBay, a wide array of tickets awaited the right deep-pocketed buyer. A UFC 83 search Tuesday unearthed some 230 items. How about a pair for $2,999? Or for those looking for a complete evening's entertainment, a pair of VIP tickets with dinner and parking for $3,000? You could get three floor seats four rows from the Octagon for $10,500.
MontrealVIP.com, which bills itself as a "unique VIP service that takes care of all your needs," was soliciting offers for a deluxe package that offers four floor tickets, private jet transportation from anywhere in North America, two nights in the presidential suite at a downtown hotel plus "VIP nightlife."
The starting bid was $200,000.
The UFC expects some 21,000 to attend the show, its biggest audience ever for the event, which is headlined by local hometown favorite Georges St. Pierre against his most bitter rival, Matt Serra. The two went at it on April 7, 2007 in a match that saw Serra crowned the new UFC Welterweight Champion with a 3 minute 25 second shocking KO in the 1st round.
Serra was scheduled to defend his title at UFC 79 against Matt Hughes, but was forced to pull out of the fight with a herniated disc in his lower back.
St. Pierre, meanwhile, won a unanimous decision over Josh Koscheck. He then defeated Matt Hughes, forcing the UFC Legend to tap out to an armbar, and won the UFC Interim Welterweight Championship by doing so.
But those ticket prices are ridiculously high. Maybe it's better to watch the event on pay per view.
