The local CBS affiliate in Fort Smith, Arkansas has posted a report on what
appears to be a stunt filmed for Sacha Baron Cohen's "Bruno" movie coming out
later this year.
FORT SMITH -
The King of Cringe has struck again in Arkansas.
British comedian and filmmaker Sacha Baron Cohen has made a career of
putting people in uncomfortable situations, then turning their reactions into
comedy gold. Several sketches from his "Da Ali G Show" have involved
unsuspecting Arkansans, including former Governor Mike Huckabee.
This time, his target was the audience of a cage match June 6th
at the Fort Smith Convention Center. Karen Hobbs, who booked the match,
says she had no idea Cohen was behind the fight.
"I was contacted by a company out of Louisiana, a legitimate
promotion company," she said Tuesday. "They also informed me they
would be doing some video taping for a reality show, and audience members would
have to sign waivers."
The fight was promoted locally and on the internet, and around 1,500
people from Arkansas and Oklahoma attended the event.
Stacy Goodsen, a local boxing trainer and promoter, was hired to help
with security. He says the person running the fights, "Straight Dave",
turned out to be Cohen.
"He was walking into the ring, and I knew I'd seen him on the Borat
movie before," Goodsen said. "He had long hair and cammo on... looked like
someone you'd go turkey hunting with."
Goodsen says Cohen had been leading the audience in several off-color
songs several times; towards the end, he challenged any gay person in the
audience to a fight. Goodsen says a planted actor in the audience
went into the ring with Cohen, and started fighting him.
"They started beating each other to death, I mean really hitting each
other," he says. "Then they just started...making out, tearing each
others clothes off. That's when I realized why I'd been brought there,
because the crowd went crazy."
Also working security that night were 18 off-duty police officers.
But unlike the crowd, they knew what was going to happen.
"Not specifically what was going to happen, no," said
Corporal Mikeal Bates with the Fort Smith Police Department.
"We'd met with the production company before-hand because they wanted to make
sure what the law was, how far they could go. And they took right up to
the line, then stopped."
It took officers 45 minutes to clear the entire convention center
after the incident. Cpl. Bates says no one was injured, and no citations
were issued.
It's believed the stunt will wind up in Cohen's next film, though
it's likely the people who went to the fight won't be in line to get
tickets.
"You could tell in their faces they'd been made fools of," says
Goodsen. "They were just shocked and embarrassed they'd been taken
advantage of."
