FORMER WWE superstar
Brock Lesnar is hoping to notch his first UFC win when he steps into the Octagon
against Heath Herring this weekend.
Lesnar is the first high profile
professional wrestler to compete in MMA and made his debut at UFC 82 in February
against Frank Mir.
Despite troubling the former
heavyweight champion early on with some vicious ground and pound, Lesnar fell
foul to a knee bar and was submitted 90 seconds into the match.
More interesting than his pro
wrestling background is his outstanding amateur wrestling pedigree. He’ll be
relying on this come Saturday to enable him to pin Herring and rain down blows
for the TKO win.
Lesnar’s trainer Greg Nelson
revealed he has been working on his submission awareness, boxing and dirty
boxing and that the former WWE man takes in information at a phenomenal rate.
He’ll need all of those skills to ensure he doesn’t drop two in a row and risk
his longevity as a marquee fighter.
Herring on the other hand is a
vastly more experienced fighter than Lesnar - in fact, he has fought interim
champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira more times than Lesnar has had pro fights!
Despite having mixed fortunes over
the last few years Herring is said to have re-dedicated himself to the sport and
his decision victory over top contender Cheik Kongo at UFC 73 showed some
evidence of this.
At best he is an aggressive heavy
hitter standing, good at dishing out punishment from the top and avoiding
punishment on the bottom. He’s also said to have worked hard improving his Muay
Thai although against Lesnar I’d expect this to be evidenced in the clinch.
Lesnar has a lot of pressure on him
coming into this bout. As mentioned before he doesn’t want to go 0-2 in the UFC
and he is also fighting in front of his home crowd against a much more
experienced fighter.
Brock deserves credit for wanting
to test himself but I feel that Herring will be too much for him on the night.
Herring has dispatched fighters such as Tom Erikson and Mark Kerr who were both
big wrestlers and ground ‘n’ pound artists of their time and he should overcome
Lesnar.
I think that Lesnar will get on top
of Herring but he won’t be able to finish him. Herring will weather the storm
and, as Lesnar starts to tire, pile on the punishment. Getting used to getting
hit is not something that can be learnt quickly and Herring will win by TKO in
the second or third round.
