Would Anderson Silva step up in weight to challenge UFC Heavyweight
Champion Brock Lesnar?
THE DAILY STAR
sure seems to think so. In regards to a possible Brock vs Silva showdown, reporter
Kevin Francis wrote:
ANDERSON Silva loves a
challenge. And now he could be ready to take on the biggest one of all by
climbing into the Octagon with man-mountain Brock Lesnar.
I believe that brilliant Brazilian Silva
is seriously contemplating giving up his world middleweight crown to concentrate
on the light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions in the future.
And it would be in the biggest division
where he could go to war with champ Lesnar who would have a weight advantage of
more than FOUR stone over him.
Silva
moved to light-heavy over the weekend where he demolished Forrest Griffin with
a spectacular striking display at UFC 101 in Philadelphia.
The contest was over inside the first round
and left people talking about a possible match-up with world light-heavy champ
Lyoto Machida – but the pair are friends and I understand Silva will never meet
him for that reason.
And that’s where a
bout with Lesnar could come into the picture. Although the giant American is far
heavier, both fighters are similar in height at around 6ft 3ins and I know that
Silva would not be afraid of such a challenge.
He gave a clue to his feelings when he said after beating
Griffin inside four minutes: “I want to fight against the
best.
“Whoever the best
is at the time, I want to fight them.”
Silva certainly KO’d the boo brigade who gave him some jeers
following his far from impressive showings in his previous two bouts against
Patrick Cote and Thales Leites in which he was the victor on both occasions.
Now he could be heading for that clash with
Lesnar as he hopes to spend his time moving up and down between the light-heavy
and heavyweight divisions as he continues to show just how dominant he is.
BJ Penn returned to the light-weight
division and showed why he is still the best 155-pounder in the world as he
submitted No.1 contender Kenny Florian in the fourth round of the main event at
the weekend.
It was Penn’s second
successful defence of the title he won against Joe Stevenson in 2008 and it was
a good comeback following his last fight loss to Georges St-Pierre.
Penn said: “This fight was very important.
After you get a loss like I had to GSP, it was very important to come back. I
wasn’t used to going places and the fans booing me.”
Florian fought valiantly at times but it was to no avail, with
the tap-out coming at 3:54 of the fourth.
